Sometimes when I’m reading other blogs, I see a comment which just strikes an exceptional note and I think to myself, “that one’s goin’ straight to the pool room.”
This response on Tim Blair’s blog by Wm Lawrence, to yet another Lefty proclaiming how much better it would be if America would just be a little more progressive, a little more sophisticated, a little more Leftist, a little (okay, a lot) more like Europe, is one of them.
Consider it pool-roomed.
Josh,
Most of our ancestors voluntarily left Europe to escape its wars, famines, injustices and political arrangements. That some on this continent seem to yearn for a more european culture is only a testament to our political system, which has allowed them to become rich, lazy, complacent and effete.
They mistake european customs for sophistication when they are really just symptoms of the ennui of an old spent and dying civilization in the agonizingly slow process of committing suicide.
You comment that nearly all of the european political parties are of the left as if that were a net good. We don’t see it that way.
All the left is good at is stealing the wealth produced by individuals and using it to purchase political power for themselves. That power is then used to insulate the “ruling class” from the unpleasantness that their utopian dreams force upon the rest of us.
Our political system is based on the principle that the government is granted rights by the people and that it exists only to secure those rights. If that results in a system you consider to be extreme right so be it, but don’t expect an apology from me. Maybe you can arrange one from Barack, to go with all of them you got from Clinton, if we are so cursed.
The rest of the world sees individual rights as being granted by the government whose only duty is to protect itself at the expense of individual rights. I consider that Idea (with considerable evidence) to be dangerously left wing.
I suppose the illuminati of the left consider us “fascistic” or some other meaningless epithet, but let’s recall where all those ideas sprang from.
Benighted as we may be we are not the ones who are unable to utter a word which might offend a favored minority under threat of criminal action, who are unable to protect ourselves from criminals who invade our homes, or whose daughters are under threat of being assaulted in their own land for not being “modest’ enough to avoid attracting the attention of a group of “religious” thugs. At least not yet.
Here is to Europe, may she go to hell in her own way. I for one don’t think the europeans have much to teach us about how to govern ourselves and I consider those who would emulate their politics to be traitors to our constitution and unworthy to govern.

The Brits however found it convenient to keep sending the ANZACS up against overwhelming odds. Ironically, even in defeat, the great courage and fighting spirit Australia displayed along with New Zealand at Gallipoli-was the Birth of a Great Nation in Australia. Ataturk, the great commander at Gallipoli and the future leader of the new Turkish Republic would have more respect for the fighting spirit and courage of the Australians and and New Zealanders than British themselves, calling the fallen at Gallipoli..”Our sons also”. As I Remember Churchill was sacked during that period.
At Kokoda Australians fought and died bravely in turning back the Japanese crack units, on Australian soil itself-with no support or help from the British. That is where the great relationship started between Australia and the United States, militarily and otherwise. The Australians proved to be valiant soldiers once again fighting side by side with the US in Vietnam also..while the British stuck their noses in the air saying it was not a “European matter”
Europe? Good place for Kerry and Obama to do a future commercial.
Hey my British friends that were Royal Marines..now you know I wasn’t alking about you..nor Prince Harry a good JTAC soldier in the tradition of ANGLICO in the time he was in
One has to be careful you know..I mean there Are some good Brits around LOL

When he was talking about “our ancestors,” Al, he was talking about Americans. You all have a little different history than America does – you were still all British citizens until the 50’s, weren’t you? There was no such thing as “an Australian citizen” until after WWII …

I like the bit where he points out,
“Benighted as we may be we are not the ones who are unable to utter a word which might offend a favored minority under threat of criminal action, who are unable to protect ourselves from criminals who invade our homes, or whose daughters are under threat of being assaulted in their own land for not being “modest’ enough to avoid attracting the attention of a group of “religious” thugs. Take that, you self-proclaimed elites and Euroweenie-worshippers. (Although judging from some of the horror I see expressed that Americans are still allowed to, say, defend their own homes with lethal force if necessary, some probably think that all those things are Good Things. Sad.)

Spot..I think there is a little confusion here ..sorry lol..I’m an American and when I post here I assume (shouldn’t really) that Australians are usually posting..but then realize that there are posters from everywhere. I did re-read the article and sorry for the confusuion. However, I think what I said about the Aussies and the Brits is fairly accurate..or I would like to think I was.
As for my mentioning the British Royal Marines..we were brothers..as I was an American US Marine. A little bit of trivia..during the War of 1812 the British Marines had enough respect for their American counterparts that they did not burn down the US Marine Commandant’s home in Washington.
As for Prince Harry I respect him for wanting to be with his men and requesting a combat assignment to Afghanistan where his men were deployed..as I understand it he was a JTAC or a Joint Terminal Attack Controller which is also part of the ANGLICO Marine traning.

I’m an eleventh generation American. John got here in 1657, before the US was the US. His great-grandson, William II, fought with Washington during the American Revolution, my great-great grandfather, Parker, fought for the Union in the US Civil War, and my grandfather, Hobart Sr., was Navy enlisted in WW I. WW II, Korea and Vietnam, my dad took care of.
IOW, my folks figured Europe for a losing cause 350 years ago. LOL!

Ah, now I remember that you are indeed a Yank, Al. T’was 5:30 in the morning here, and reading your comment about the ANZACS I mis-assumed you were one of these younger Aussies who don’t understand that until after WWII there was no such thing as an Australian.
So many Aussie Lefties, for all their hatred of America and all things American, seem to conflate their history and traditions with those of America, when in reality all Aussies are still ruled by a hereditary Monarch who, as the comment above says, graciously “grants” rights to her subjects – whereas Americans graciously “grant” rights to their Government.
One of my favourite things is hearing Aussie America-bashers rabbiting on about “Freedom of Speech” and “Freedom of Religion,” not realising that our modern concepts of those rights spring from evil hatey America.

Angus..you are the closest to a John McCain than anywhere here!I believe his greats went way back about as far as your greats did and fought in the same wars too!!
King George was a nut anyway..and I wasn’t convinced that maybe all Brits had a bit of insanity in them (excluding the British Royal Marines of course..gotta watch out for “friendly fire” you know) until I read that they dug up Crowell’s bones just to have his skull chopped off by the executioner for doing in the King! LOL

It’s ok Spot, I probably sounded like an Australian with my post lol..This is the Worst generation I have ever seen- worldwide- insofar as youth is concerned. But I must say there are a good deal of great young men and women out there. Many of whom are fighting and dying for our very freedoms right now..and certainly it is not just Australian youth that have this problem as you mentioned.
I’ve always had a special feeling for Aussies..great people with a Tremendous amount of heart and fighting spirit in the tradition of the America I used to know.
Ironically the first time I was saw and admired this spirit was watching a Tennis match (my favorite sport is boxing..always has been), and although never a Tennis guy started watching Tennis (and playing too) after I watched an “old man” named Rod Laver Trounce a younger “upstart” John Newcomb on TV as a teenager. Newcomb was boasting how Laver at 39 was “over the hill”– Now..Did Newcomb start this whole new generation thing? LOL..Just kidding. . he took his loss well.
Anyway, it was a pleasure watching Laver..whom I had never seen in my life before masterfully outplay his younger but admittedly very talented opponent. I recently checked Laver’s record and was amazed at what I saw..not a big fellow at all..other than the size of his left forearm..which I remember the TV Commentator as saying..was as big and powerful as Rocky Marciano’s..Laver won a Grand Slam as an amateur And as a Pro..and many think he was the best Tennis player of all time.
How did I get on Tennis anyway??? It has to be the insomnia..I think I will grab a beer like Angus did earlier and hit the sack! Cheers

Hey..forgot to say I like the New Zealanders too..had friends from both places when growing up! Do they get mad when you call them “Kiwis”? I forgot..LOL..Gotta get that beer and some z’s…..
October 8, 2008, 4:55 pm at 4:55 pm
Nah, they don’t get mad when we call ‘em “Kiwis”. Usually they have some kind of smartass response.
Or they “baa”. It’s in their blood.
October 8, 2008, 7:29 pm at 7:29 pm
“Baa”? Are you calling them the “Black Sheep”?? LOL
I gotta be careful here..one of my old buddies is from New Zealand
