New Hampshire to Conduct Recount of Presidential Primary

Dennis Kucinich is getting his way. Kucinich n. pronunciation d-i-c-k-h-e-a-d

New Hampshire officials said Friday they will conduct a hand recount of the state’s Democratic and Republican presidential primaries at the request of two minor candidates — Kucinich, who received less than 1.4 percent, and Republican Albert Howard of Michigan, who received about 44 votes statewide. They are expected to pay a $2,000 fee to start the process, state officials said.

It seems I’ve been given a reprieve

When Mr. H says “tomorrow”, he actually means “Saturday”, or “next week”. After many years with him, I should be used to this. The original warning stands, though, so if I fail to shower you with my gloriously perceptive opinions all of a sudden for a few days, think nothing of it.

In the meantime, I give you this, in honor of Angus Dei’s previous marvelous post on the universe. I absolutely adore anything to do with the cosmos, and would have made a great astronaut, if that career had been open to women in my day, and didn’t require a prodigious understanding of mathematical formulations.

Size Matters

“Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the Western Spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.” – Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Man versus Blue Whale:

size_01.jpg

Man: 6 feet/200 pounds

Blue Whale: 110 feet/400,000 pounds.

Most people think of the Dinosaurs as being the largest creatures to ever live, but they weren’t: The Blue Whale, a mammal, is the largest creature ever to inhabit the earth, and they are alive right now.

Earth versus Moon: (The fucking moon, fer chrissakes)

size_02.jpg

Moon: circumference 6,790 miles

Earth: circumference 24,901.55 miles

Distance to scale:

size_03.jpg

Earth to Moon: average distance 238,855 miles

Earth versus Sun:

size_04.jpg

Sun: circumference 2,713,406 miles/distance 94,500,000 miles (8.3 light-minutes)

Sun versus Luminous Blue Variable 1806-20

size_05.jpg

LBV 1806-20: 130-150 solar masses/30-50 light-years distant (The largest star known to science)

Sun versus Milky Way Galaxy

size_06.jpg

(This is an artist’s impression based on current science)

Milky Way: 100,000 light-years across/300,000,000,000 stars

Milky Way versus Andromeda Galaxy:

size_07.jpg

Andromeda Galaxy: 250,000 light-years across/1,000,000,000,000 stars

Milky Way to Andromeda: distance 2,500,000 light-years (Andromeda is the closest galaxy)

Galaxy versus Universe:

size_08.jpg

This is the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image. There are six stars in the photo, which you can distinguish by the points they’ve developed during the ultra-long exposure. Those stars are at the very outer edge of the Milky Way. Basically, this is the darkest patch of sky that there is. Other than those obvious stars, every single point of light in this image is a galaxy!!!

The size of this patch of sky is the size of a pencil eraser viewed from a distance of eight feet. Another way to look at it is that it’s 1/50th the size of the surface of the moon as viewed from earth. To take a photo like this of the entire sky with current technology would take over 1,000,000 years.

The universe is fucking huge.
