A 37-year-old American businesswoman and married mother of three is seeking justice after she was thrown in jail by Saudi Arabia’s religious police for sitting with a male colleague at a Starbucks coffee shop in Riyadh, according to a report in The Times of London on Thursday.
Yara, who does not want her last name published for fear of retribution, was bruised and crying when she was freed from a day in prison after she was strip-searched, threatened and forced to sign false confessions by the Kingdom’s “Mutaween” police, The Times reported.
“Some men came up to us with very long beards and white dresses. They asked ‘Why are you here together?’. I explained about the power being out in our office. They got very angry and told me what I was doing was a great sin,” recalled Yara, who wears an abaya and headscarf, like most Saudi women.
The men were from Saudi Arabia’s Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, a police force of several thousand men charged with enforcing dress codes, sex segregation and the observance of prayers.
Yara says she was interrogated, strip-searched and forced to sign and fingerprint a series of confessions pleading guilty to her “crime,” the Times reported.

MIKE BLOOMBERG IS RUNNING PETITIONS for a third party run. Meanwhile, I notice that the book I got in the mail and linked today is something of a ground-preparer for Bloomberg. Judging by its Amazon sales rank, I’d say he’d better reconsider . . . .
She’s all-in, evidently.
Lisa Shiffren put up a post at NRO’s The Corner today that just blew my doors off. In it, she links to an article by Jerry Zeriman – a life-long Democrat – that begins:
“I have just seen Hillary Clinton and her former Yale law professor both in tears at a campaign rally here in my home state of Connecticut. Her tearful professor said how proud he was that his former student was likely to become our next President. Hillary responded in tears.
My own reaction was of regret that, when I terminated her employment on the Nixon impeachment staff, I had not reported her unethical practices to the appropriate bar associations. “
Wow. Just fucking wow.
Another wow-inducing passage:
“After President Nixon’s resignation a young lawyer, who shared an office with Hillary, confided in me that he was dismayed by her erroneous legal opinions and efforts to deny Nixon representation by counsel-as well as an unwillingness to investigate Nixon. In my diary of August 12, 1974 I noted the following:
John Labovitz apologized to me for the fact that months ago he and Hillary had lied to me [to conceal rules changes and dilatory tactics.] Labovitz said, “That came from Yale.” I said, “You mean Burke Marshall [Senator Ted Kennedy’s chief political strategist, with whom Hillary regularly consulted in violation of House rules.] Labovitz said, “Yes.” His apology was significant to me, not because it was a revelation but because of his contrition.
At that time Hillary Rodham was 27 years old. She had obtained a position on our committee staff through the political patronage of her former Yale law school professor Burke Marshall and Senator Ted Kennedy. Eventually, because of a number of her unethical practices I decided that I could not recommend her for any subsequent position of public or private trust.”
Needless to say, you should read the whole thing.
Honestly, I have always though Hillary was more stupid than evil, but now I see that I was way to charitable and optimistic. I had no earthly idea Hillary was so abjectly amoral.
But then, she is a lawyer, so I should have know better.
The toxicology result for Heath Ledger’s death was released today and I have to admit some surprise with the results. Although no less than six different compounds were detected in his system, they are generally not regarded as dangerous drugs if, as the statement was made, they weren’t taken in excessive amounts and by an otherwise healthy individual. Oxycodone and hydrocodone are two potent forms of codeine and will interact with the three benzodiazepines he also took – diazepam, temazepam and alprazolam – to cause cardiac and respiratory depression. In other words, his heart rate became too slow and weak and his respirations too slow and shallow to supply his heart and brain with enough blood and oxygen. The doxylamine is similar, in Australia usually being found as a component in mersyndol, but not in very high doses. Tragic.
The term ‘accidental overdose’ is clearly being used in this case to indicate he took the drugs with no intention of suicide. But such a combination of related pharmaceuticals taken all together certainly qualifies as overdose and substance abuse. No way I’m going to pass judgements on that; what guts me the most is that he had a two year old daughter and I wonder if had she been there would he still have resorted to the pills for comfort? From my own experience, it would take a helluva lot to separate me from my little boy and as much as I protect him, he protects me. He was sick last night, went to bed with a slight fever. I checked on him a couple of hours later and found him whimpering and shaking with a very high temperature. Thankfully a little nurofen and a sleep between mummy and daddy sees him bright eyed and bushy tailed again this morning. For me and my wife, he’s the most important thing in the world. I could never be Heath, living alone, half a world away.
Blood is thicker than pills.
Rest in Peace, Heath.
“Online encyclopedia Wikipedia has again stirred up controversy — this time over a biographical entry on the prophet Muhammad.”
“Nearly 100,000 people worldwide have signed a Web-based petition asking Wikipedia to remove all depictions of the Prophet from its English-language entry, viewable here.”
“I request all brothers and sisters to sign this petitions so we can tell Wikipedia to respect the religion and remove the illustrations,” the creator of the petition at The Petition Site asks.
“Opposition among Muslims to images of Muhammad has its roots in the prohibition of “graven images” in the Ten Commandments, but has varied over time.”
“Islamic teaching has traditionally discouraged representation of humans, particularly Muhammad, but that doesn’t mean it’s nonexistent,” Notre Dame history professor Paul M. Cobb told the New York Times. “Some of the most beautiful images in Islamic art are manuscript images of Muhammad.”
And a post I put up earlier, here are links if you want to donate to serving soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as a couple of disabled veterans of this and earlier wars.
I adopted a platoon in Afghanistan through this one. They’re now back in Texas, but I have some heartfelt letters of thanks from them. You know the best thing I sent them? Mouse and rat traps. They lived in a tent and then in a hut, and they said they couldn’t keep food there because that attracted rodents, and the rodents attracted cobras. I told that story at the Dollar Store where I bought the traps, and ended up recruiting more donors for the site.
Thanks to Ash for these following:
Lots of links with this one
Identifies some not so good charities as well as good ones, worth checking out.
Here’s one I found by googling, which donates computers to needy veterans of all wars who need an online contact with the outside world.
There’s also another one that donates computers for returning wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who need a computer in order even to communicate, but I couldn’t find the link for that one. I first saw it on Instapundit’s site.
I’ll dig for it, but if anybody happens to have that link, please feel free to put it up. Thanks.I apologize for the lack of Australian, UK, Dutch, Polish, or any other Coalition sites for veterans, but I’m confident they’re out there. Also post those in comments, if you can.

Gee, really hate bringing this idiom out…BUT isn’t this…..”The pot calling the kettle black” (to say something about someone else which is actually true of you yourself…this explantion is for the ignorants out there, such as one in a thread or two below, (now “blacklisted”, in WordPress’s own words) that think this, a “racist” comment)

Via Drudge and Politico, Obama Takes Delegate Lead!
Now, y’all have a super-nice day!! 🙂
I’ll leave the extended analysis to all the political wonks out there. Me? I like to get to the crux of the matter: Show me the numbers.
On the Democrat side, here’s the delegate count this morning:
Clinton: 825
Obama: 732
Needed: 2,025
Obama is within one-hundred delegates of Hillary. This tells me Hillary is a very, very weak candidate, and would be a lot more vulnerable in the general election than any of her backers would care to admit, unless she has Obama as her running mate. Despite the previous acrimony, Obama is ambitious, and after being veep for four to eight years, all that “inexperience” crap would be out the window. This is what I expect: Clinton-Obama or Obama-Clinton in the fall. Either way, I think the Republican’s have about a zero-percent chance of winning against them.
Here’s how it adds up the Republicans:
McCain: 615
Romney: 268
Huckabee: 169
Needed: 1,191
McCain’s going to be the nominee. Get used to it all you lip-quivering Romney backers. The real surprise last night was how well Huckabee did. Basically, McCain and Huckabee tag-team bitch-slapped Romney out of the race. If he stays in, it will be nothing but pride and futility. People just don’t like the guy and won’t vote for him, especially the evangelicals. I have a lot of evangelical friends, so this does not surprise me in the least: They don’t even recognize Mormon baptisms as being legit, never mind a Mormon presidential candidate. Since McCain genuinely dislikes Romney, no way he’ll be the veep candidate: McCain-Huckabee is what I expect, but McCain could choose someone outside the candidates. Because I expect the black-plague of Huckabee Derangement Syndrome will make McCain Derangement Syndrome look like a common cold among the right-tards, I’m sure that ticket will lose in a landslide to Clinton-Obama/Obama-Clinton in the fall. In fact, I don’t care who McCain picks to run with, I don’t think he has a chance in hell.
Have a nice day. 🙂
Take that, Romney! You six-million-dollar whore!
Jewish authorities are going to destroy a mosque which was built unlawfully 700 years ago.
Needless to say, this invokes the “Eeeeeeeeeevil Joooooooos!” claims.
This of course, requires us to completely forget that Muslims claim that they’re law abiding citizens and that Islam promotes peace and love, and pretend that they never broke the law that they attempt to make us believe they always follow. Anyone up for some carbecue?
