Internet Survey: Why People First Went Online — and Why They Stayed

From Pew Research (Internet & American Life Project), “A Portrait of Early Adopters: Why People First Went Online –and Why They Stayed.” Some interesting excerpts:

“Our canvassing of longtime internet users shows that the things that first brought them online are still going strong on the internet today. Then, it was bulletin boards; now, it’s social networking sites. Then, it was the adventure of exploring the new cyberworld; now, it’s upgrading to broadband and wireless connections to explore even more aggressively.

“Yet there are changes in their activities and motives. In the early days, most internet users consumed material from websites. These days they are just as likely to produce material. One common refrain is that they think more change lies ahead and they are eager to watch and participate.

“Though people might assume that the rapid uptake of the internet by businesses was the main driver of growth in the past decade, many of our respondents said they first went online for personal reasons, rather than professional or educational reasons. Fully 50% of the respondents stated they first went online for “personal” reasons; 31% said work was the cause; 19% said school was the cause. In fact, in a series of Pew Internet surveys going back to 2000, respondents have continuously cited personal reasons above work-related or school-related reasons as the cause for their first using the internet.” (full report here.)

Iran nuclear plans of “serious concern”: U.N. body…S.S.D.D.

VIENNA (Reuters) – The U.N. nuclear watchdog said on Friday Iran had failed to explain Western intelligence reports showing explosives and missile work linked to the production of atomic bombs and that this was a “serious concern”.

But the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also said Iran had increased cooperation with U.N. inspectors in the past few months.

MICHELLE OBAMA RESTRICT ACCESS TO THESIS

Michelle Obama’s Princeton thesis is restricted until November 5, 2008. Why? It depends when the restriction was instituted. The answer to the why is simpler. Michelle’s jaundiced view of the US may have at least in part originated in her Princeton experience. She has admitted that her grades did not earn her the right to attend the top colleges she did. Affirmative action did but it did not make her grateful merely resentful. Unfortunately instead of blaming her inadeqacy, she blamed her pigmentation and the institution which made her feel inadequate. I have taught long enough to know that students know when they are graded fairly and fairly includes too lenietely. Michelle seems to have been unhappy about the low expectation liberal Princeton had for her and her fellow affrimative action students. Indeed, she wrote a thesis on the subject which includes the following:

“My experiences at Princeton have made me far more aware of my ‘Blackness’ than ever before,” she wrote in the introduction to her sociology thesis, “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community.” “I have found that at Princeton, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my White professors and classmates try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor on campus; as if I really didn’t belong.”

The rest must be worse. Barak may be on his way to becoming our first affirmative action president. Imagine how they are going to fill in the White House?!
