Jack Gibson RIP

Jack Gibson, a legend of Australian rugby league, passed away overnight.

Born and raised as I was in Victoria, the birthplace of Australian Rules football, I know Gibson only for his brilliant collection of quotes Played Strong Done Fine. This one from champion boxer James J Corbett stands out above all.

Fight one more round. When your feet are so tired that you have to shuffle back to the centre of the ring, fight one more round. When your arms are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands to come on guard, fight one more round. When your nose is bleeding and your eyes are black and you are so tired that you wish your opponent would crack you one on the jaw and put you to sleep, fight one more round – remembering that the man who always fights one more round is never whipped.

Yet a bit more mulgawatch (ABC phone call edition)

I will not give in yet!!Well I bit the bullet and rang the ABC, as it had been 2 weeks since my written complaint was sent off. First switchboard lady fobbed me off to another bloke who made sympathetic noises.

I pointed out a few of the more extreme bits from the mulga and he said “Well it is a bit debateable wether its over the line or not”. I pointed out that if it was any other group being singled out rather than Israel it would be quickly judged as racist (Got to hit them with their own buzzwords), and mentioned how mediawatch pulled up a few blogs a year or 2 ago for comments less extreme than these.

Remember how Richard Clarke was worried that Osama would “boogie to Baghdad” if we invaded Afghanistan? Well, I guess he was right to worry, in general if not in specific. . . . I guess it’s no big surprise — Saddam offered bin Laden asylum back in 1999 — but given that nowadays a lot of people pretend that any kind of cooperation between Saddam and Al Qaeda is unimaginable, it’s worth pointing out.

Elvis Rudd?

Demonstrating yet again that Western Australia (“Don’t blame us; we voted Liberal”) is chock-full of uncommonly intelligent and perspicacious folks of all ages, the children at St John’s School in Geraldton have submitted the poster below as their contribution to Parliament House’s “20th Anniversary” School Posters competition.

In amidst all of the good traditional iconic Australian images, please note the amazingly apt likeness of our new PM, star-sucker Rockstar Rudd.
