‘There is an old story in the defense bar of a criminal defendant given a 50-year sentence from a judge and [the defendant] exclaims, “but, Judge, I’m 45 now and I don’t think I can do all that time!” The judge responded, “Well, just do the best you can.”’
Actually, Tiz, that quotation comes from a former sheriff of the county I live in. He also happens to be a singer/guitarist and a friend of mine. The story is, a middle aged woman and her boyfriend murdered a rich guy she ensnared, and she got 50 years as an accomplice. As the sheriff was leading her away, she said, “But I’m forty-five years old! I can’t do fifty years!”
The sheriff replied, “Just do as much as you can.” She actually filed a complaint against him, but the judge refused to hear it.
Texas justice can be harsh, and I don’t always agree with it, but sometimes it really does do a fantastic job.
