Surprising Sight At Federation Square

Last Friday I was on an adventure in Melbourne City. It was the Fourth of July, and that fact is very relevant.

I was walking along Flinders St Station, about to cross over to the trams in the middle of the road between Federation Square and the Station, when I spied something I never thought I’d see at Federation Square, owing to the fact that it’s the base of the SBS TV station (often referred to as the Socialist Broadcasting System), and houses a bunch of Arts-focused organisations.

Here’s what I observed:

    Good onya!

Somewhere Richard Ryan is gesticulating wildly and ripping off emails to the Rudd Gov’t.

Is that the station(Flinders) that takes you down to the Aussie Tennis Open? I believe it is technically called “Flinders Park”.

I took photographic evidence to make sure it wasn’t my imagination messing with me Yojimbo.

He certainly is! Not to mention, he’d be Carbon-Copying them to the Brumby (State) Government… if it didn’t cause Global Warming.

It’s the closest station Yojimbo, but you’d catch a tram down to Flinders Park (the stadium is called Rod Laver Arena). If you catch the right one, it only takes 4 or 5 minutes.

I thought so Angus. It was touchingly sweet for the Government to swallow their pride enough to do it.

Rumour (and rumour only) has it that the poles used, which normally house Australian flags, were not lowered to half-mast for ANZAC Day. It’s just rumour though, because I haven’t been able to confirm it.

  5. yojimbo Says:

Geez! That would almost require a conscious effort on their part to stop it since there is a set protocol for things like that. I certainly hope that is left in the rumour category.

    Australia is the 52 state?

  7. Angus Dei Says:

Not sure about the state deal 1.618, but I do know Australia is the only other country I’d consider living in.

I nominate Baja California for the 51st state. Then I could go to Cabo San Lucas and be at home. 🙂

We’re not a State 1.6, but I wouldn’t hesitate much to call us a sister country and a part of the best coalition seen since WWII.

Yojimbo, it seems unlikely because many of the veterans on the way to the Shrine would have passed by Federation Square (they actually walk from a couple of blocks north past the Station and the Square and walk a fair way south down to ANZAC Avenue and the Shrine), but I wouldn’t put it past some of the scumbags at Fed Square. And we certainly would have heard about it if they pissed off the vets. I’ve got the rumour safely tucked away under “Highly Probably Bullshit” for now. If anything, they probably had both the Australian flags and the ANZAC flag flying at half-mast, and the person I heard this off was confused about the ANZAC flag.

Well, SAY something...
