Race Proves to Be Unwelcome but Persistent Issue

Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), right, with Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, at its Orlando conference. (By Matt Stroshane — Bloomberg News)

Yesterday showed how hard it will be for both to avoid the issue now that it has burst into the public sphere. Obama was heckled in St. Petersburg by black nationalists who accused him of not doing enough for the African American community. In Florida’s Panhandle, McCain faced a barrage of questions from reporters and asserted that he is not running a negative campaign “in the slightest,” even as his aides launched their latest online attack ad mocking Obama as a candidate with a messiah complex.

“I don’t think it’s negative. I think we’re drawing differences between us,” McCain said, adding that Obama “brought up the issue of race,” and, “I responded to it. Because I’m disappointed, and I don’t want that issue to be part of this campaign.”

I wouldn’t put it past the Obama camp, to have paid those hecklers, so the big O could be “heckled”.

Recycling Is Garbage…Courtesy, J.M.

AS THEY PUT ON PLASTIC GLOVES FOR THEIR first litter hunt, the third graders knew what to expect. They knew their garbage. It was part of their science curriculum at Bridges Elementary, a public school on West 17th Street in Manhattan. They had learned the Three R’s — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle — and discussed how to stop their parents from using paper plates. For Earth Day they had read a Scholastic science publication, “Inside the World of Trash.” For homework, they had kept garbage diaries and drawn color-coded charts of their families’ trash. So they were primed for the field experiment on this May afternoon.

Israel lets fleeing Fatah men in after deadly Gaza clashes

Shortly after the fighting subsided, dozens of Fatah members, including Ahmed and Adel Helis, fled to the Nahal Oz crossing with Israel in a bid to escape to the West Bank city of Ramallah, home to Abbas’s headquarters.

Israel allowed a total of 150 Palestinians who put down their guns to cross as a “humanitarian measure,” an army spokesman said. The wounded were taken to hospital and the rest were transported to Ramallah.

Israel’s Magen David Adom medical services treated six Palestinians for serious wounds and three more who were lightly injured, spokesman Zaki Heller said.

Defence Minister Ehud Barak authorised the rare measure following a personal request from Abbas, Palestinian prime minister Salam Fayyad and Egypt, a senior defence official told AFP.

Israel closed all of its crossings with Gaza following Hamas’s violent takeover, but has agreed to allow basic products in under a June ceasefire.

Palestinian militants fired several mortar rounds towards the Nahal Oz crossing in violation of the truce, with four falling inside Israel and eight on the Palestinian side, an army spokesman said.

The Fairy Tale Waltz…A Must Read re: Obama race-cardiness.

Bob Herbert

Barack Obama is having a press conference this morning and it is being dominated by questions about the ‘race card.’ That makes it a good press conference for McCain. The big hook for McCain is the fact that Obama supporters disgracefully smeared Bill and Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primaries.

Here’s the problem — Bob Herbert spent the entire Democratic primary accusing Bill and Hillary Clinton of having no class, being persons without scruples and of playing the race card. He is now disqualified from pushing back against John McCain’s race baiting and disgraceful campaign. Indeed, McCain welcomes a blast from Bob Herbert. Why? Because he can quote what Herbert wrote and said about Bill and Hillary Clinton. More . . .Talk Left

Obama backs away from McCain’s debate challenge

AP

McCain team ‘cynical, not racist’. How’s this for nuance? Don’t fret, it will be back to “racist” soon. The Obama team, just can’t make up its mind. Maybe they can and use what mind the MSM lets them have

“I think they want to distract people from talking about real issues,” the Illinois senator said.

Mr McCain’s campaign said earlier this week that Mr Obama had “played the race card” by implying that his Republican rival was racist.

But Mr Obama in turn accused Mr McCain of bringing up the race issue.

More of this laughable, yet sad story at, the BBC

Why is the National Media Silent?

Republican members of Congress are on the floor of the House of Representatives with no lights on and no cameras on as I write this because the Speaker of the House literally turned off the power on them and skipped town. The Republicans are on the floor of the House fighting to reduce the price of gasoline at the pump. They are fighting for American families. Democrats have turned their backs on the American people and fled Capitol Hill so they do not have to vote to expand domestic oil production.

Pursuant to Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution of the United States of America, the President can compel the House of Representatives and Senate to convene in special session.

The President can force the Democrats to either vote on energy legislation or not.

Normally the American people are better served when Congress is not in session. At this time, however, *the President should call the Democrats’ bluff. Call the President at 202-456-1111 and tell him to recall the Congress to Washington to vote on expanding domestic oil production.

This is NOT a Republic, what it is, is (gosh, love it when I seem Clintonesque) A damn bad joke of an institution “of, by and for, the people”.

A Personal Note from John O’Neill

(and Human Events’ sister company, Regnery Publishing)

Dear Friend,

As you may recall, I was privileged to play a role in helping prevent John Kerry from being elected president when my fellow Swift Boat Veterans and I released the book Unfit for Command. As liberal as Kerry was, America faces an even more liberal threat today: Barack Obama. Fortunately, investigative journalist and National Review Online political reporter David Freddoso has written the book every voter needs to read: The Case Against Barack Obama: The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media’s Favorite Candidate.

Uncovering stories the mainstream media has neglected, Freddoso reveals Obama for who he really is: the U.S. senator with the #1 most liberal voting record in the Senate. And a politician whose rhetoric of “change” does not match the reality of his corrupt, “Chicago-machine politics” background.

Moving past Obama’s inspiring speeches and say-anything-to-win campaign tactics, Freddoso outlines Obama’s extreme, far-left legislative record and his questionable associations with both criminals and radicals. From Obama’s repeated support for the Chicago patronage system, to his hard-line position of no restrictions on abortion, The Case Against Barack Obama offers the cold, hard facts about this man who would be our next president.

As American citizens, it is our right and duty to question the background, character, and proposals of any candidate who could be our next commander in chief. Democrats and the media are not holding Obama accountable, so conservatives must. I’m grateful to David Freddoso and my publisher, Regnery, for finally revealing the man behind the myth.

I urge you to read The Case Against Barack Obama. I also recommend that you buy copies for your friends and relatives who may consider voting for Obama. They deserve to know the truth, too.

Sincerely,
John O’Neill

Is Climate Change… Racist?

With no Klansman to defend against or whites-only signs to tear down, certain blacks are consumed with searching for racism in a single glance or an innocuous comment or on a magazine cover or under rocks. In this case, they looked for and found racism in the skies. From the report:

African Americans are thirteen percent of the U.S. population and on average emit nearly twenty percent less greenhouse gases than non-Hispanic whites per capita. Though far less responsible for climate change, African Americans are significantly more vulnerable to its effects than non-Hispanic whites. Health, housing, economic well-being, culture, and social stability are harmed from such manifestations of climate change as storms, floods, and climate variability. African Americans are also more vulnerable to higher energy bills, unemployment, recessions caused by global energy price shocks, and a greater economic burden from military operations designed to protect the flow of oil to the U.S.

BigDog Quadruped Robot: I Find this Vaguely Creepy

You’ll really want to watch the video at this Boston Dynamics link. It’s really impressive when the guy kicks the robot dog and it doesn’t fall down, but I found myself creeped out by the thing. I’m guessing it’s a “recoil from the uncanny” response, but it really is weird in an unsettling kind of way.
